‘Language’

(Wood and wool), 2023

by Joy Millett

This piece uses a semiotic system to explore an invented, non-specific language. It has the usual components of a language, such as ciphers or symbols, space, colour, perspective, texture and rhythm. It alludes to a means to communicate, whether it be verbal, non-verbal, visual, instinctive, or nuanced. It differs from Saussure’s definition of semiotics in that the symbols do not represent anything in particular (unless the viewer wants to place their own meaning on them). In this way, judgement as to what this ‘phrase’ means, can be suspended.

In making this piece, wooden ciphers are wrapped in wool, implying an act of care. Care in the use of language and the suspension of judgement is imperative to a peaceful situation and for the avoidance of conflict. If anything, this could be the message that this piece is offering or signifying to its viewers.
